This is a lesson I developed to help Grade 1 students develop number sense, particularly regarding teen numbers and place value. Because I love hands-on, experiential learning, I decided to introduce my Grade 1 students to the Rekenrek for this lesson as a manipulative to aid in subitizing groups of ten, fives, and ones while generating stronger overall number sense.
