Coach

In my seven years working for The City of Calgary, I had the opportunity to coach Junior Lifesaving Club (JLC) and Lifesaving Society leadership courses including Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross. JLC is a competitive swim club (ages 6-13) that advocates for teamwork, friendly competition, and fitness. Lifesaving Society leadership courses, alternatively, are the courses required to certify young adults (ages 13-17) to pursue a career in lifeguarding or swim instructing. Coaching both of these branches of swim lessons taught me how to prioritize collaboration as well as how to motivate students in a competitive setting. Working as a coach has prepared me for teaching elementary school because it exposed me to a variety of learning styles and age groups while also requiring thorough lesson planning (sometimes in teams) as well as formative and summative assessments that, especially in regards to leadership courses, called for careful consideration of legal frameworks and policies.

Organizer & Programmer

One of the things I pride myself on in regards to my work ethic and drive is my organizational abilities: everything has its proper place and everything is easily accessible. From my home to my workplace, I keep everything tidy, organized, and aesthetically appealing. Messes happen though, but that is to be expected. Besides, I like to think of messes as an opportunity for reorganization and recuperation. During my time working for The City of Calgary, I was appointed Day Camp Programmer. On top of my regular swim instructing and lifeguarding duties, this job entailed:

  • calling the parent(s)/guardian(s) of each registered participant to confirm previous swim level and experience as well as answer any inquiries about the day camp program

  • organizing upwards of 70 participants into swim lessons reflective of their skill level

  • assigning upwards of five instructors a class list of participantes and particular swim level as per Lifesaving Society curricula

  • providing instructors, lifeguards, and supervisors with pool deck layouts declaring where each class would go in the pool(s) and for how long

  • during day camp swim lessons, observe participants ensuring they are in a level reflective of their swimming skills and moving participants accordingly

  • review swim instructor report card submissions for quality assurance and distribute report cards to the parent(s)/guardian(s)

I loved taking on this task in the summers because it satisfied my love for organizing and provided a structure for my colleagues that was thorough and comprehensive. Although I will not perform this same kind of organization in my future classrooms, my organizational abilities will prove to be lucrative when it comes to classroom management, LSPs/IPPs, and report cards.
